Indiana School of Music Gets $40.6 Million

INDIANAPOLIS – The INDIANA UNIVERSITY School of Music is to receive $40.6 million from the widow of David H. Jacobs, Sr., an alumnus who became a real estate developer and at one time owned the Cleveland Indians. Barbara Barrow Jacobs, who also attended the school, said the donation was in memory of her late husband. The gift is the largest contribution from an individual in the University’s (and certainly the music school’s) history. Gwyn Richards, dean of the School of Music, tells the Indianapolis Star that it “might be the largest contribution ever made by an individual to a public university music school.”

Yale University School of Music two weeks ago received a $100 million gift, the bulk of which will be used to provide free tuition.

Indiana will use its newfound riches for scholarships and fellowships.

According to Richards, “$20 million would pay for graduate fellowships, and $10 million would provide undergraduate scholarships. All that money will be matched by $30 million from INDIANA UNIVERSITY. The balance of the Jacobs gift will endow four School of Music faculty positions and will allow administrators to pay for special lectures, projects and festivals.”

The INDIANA UNIVERSITY School of Music will undergo a name change, to the Jacobs School of Music.

“The Jacobs School of Music will take its name from a family that has built malls in at least 14 states, developed office buildings and hotels and owned the Cleveland Indians from 1986 to 1999. David Jacobs died in 1992.”

The family has given generously to the music school in the past, as well.
